Energy Market Review - 11th February 2013

WTI Crude Oil is setting it self up for a big fall as we began to warn last week while we hold below 96.90/97.10 resistance.? We expect a break of good support at 95.05/94.90 perhaps as soon as today, to confirm the bearish topping pattern with 94.40 targeted then 94.05/90. Below here we should see 93.26 but we do expect to see 91.72 before we bottom out in the days to come.

Resistance today at 96.25/60 is likely to cap any move higher but above here risks a retest of 96.90/97.10. This must hold or the bearish pattern is broken and we should head back to 97.48, possibly retest 98.15/25 highs.

March Brent broke 117.95 to reach 119.07/17, in an unstoppable bull market that could now target 119.80/120.00.
Any profit taking should test 118.59 then 118.23 below with a good chance of a low for the day but any further weakness then finds excellent support at 118.02/117.94 for a buying opportunity with stops below 117.65.?

Gasoil broke closed the gap at 1021 to hit the next target of 1030. This is the high from the second half of 2012 & as predicted we topped out here. The 1029/32 band is a crucial area as it is also 21 month trend line resistance in? a severely over bought market. Even in this bull market there is a risk of a top here. A close above 1032 is now needed to continue the run to 1037 then 2012 highs of 1045 where bulls could run in to a big obstacle.

If 1029/32 remains unbeatable we should not see a big sell off just yet but should bounce around with in a range while we take a rest & get ready for the next big move. Initial support is 1025/24 but below here 1019, possibly 1016/15 which should provide a floor.?

Nat Gas held a narrow range as we test 3.258 support. If we see a bounce off here today we could head back to 3.293, possibly 3.323/327. Watch for a top here but go with a break above 3.349 for 3.373/387 resistance & a good selling opportunity.

However a break below 3.240 then keeps the market under pressure for a test of last week?s low at 3.207.

March RBOB has been hovering in a range from 298 up to 307 for almost 2 weeks. There is a little support today at 301 but below here another test of 299/98 look possible. The daily chart is calling for a correction so watch for a break below 297 to trigger stops on longs for a move to 294.88.

Resistance remains in the 306/307 area but a break &b preferably a close above here then opens the door to 309.22 which should be a very tough obstacle and could hold a rally for now.

Old drug may point the way to new treatments for diabetes and obesity

Researchers at the University of Michigan's Life Sciences Institute have found that amlexanox, an off-patent drug currently prescribed for the treatment of asthma and other uses, also reverses obesity, diabetes and fatty liver in mice.

The findings from the lab of Alan Saltiel, the Mary Sue Coleman director of the Life Sciences Institute, are scheduled to be published online Feb. 10 in the journal Nature Medicine.

"One of the reasons that diets are so ineffective in producing weight loss for some people is that their bodies adjust to the reduced calories by also reducing their metabolism, so that they are 'defending' their body weight," Saltiel said. "Amlexanox seems to tweak the metabolic response to excessive calorie storage in mice."

Different formulations of amlexanox are currently prescribed to treat asthma in Japan and canker sores in the United States. Saltiel is teaming up with clinical-trial specialists at U-M to test whether amlexanox will be useful for treating obesity and diabetes in humans. He is also working with medicinal chemists at U-M to develop a new compound ??based on the drug that optimizes its formula.

The study appears to confirm and extend the notion that the genes IKKE and TBK1 play a crucial role for maintaining metabolic balance, a discovery published by the Saltiel lab in 2009 in the journal Cell.

"Amlexanox appears to work in mice by inhibiting two genes?IKKE and TBK1?that we think together act as a sort of brake on metabolism," Saltiel said. "By releasing the brake, amlexanox seems to free the metabolic system to burn more, and possibly store less, energy."

Using high-throughput chemical screening at LSI's Center for Chemical Genomics to search for compounds that inhibit IKKE and TBK1, the researchers hit upon an approved off-patent drug: amlexanox. They then demonstrated that amlexanox had profound beneficial effects in both genetic and dietary-induced obese mice. The chemical lowered the weight of obese mice and reversed related metabolic problems such as diabetes and fatty liver.

"These studies tell us that, at least in mice, the IKKE/TBK1 pathway plays an important role in defending body weight by increasing storage and decreasing burning of calories, and that by inhibiting that pathway with a compound, we can increase metabolism and induce weight loss, reverse diabetes and reduce fatty liver," Saltiel said.

The drug has been on the market in Japan for more than 25 years.

However, the researchers don't yet know if humans respond with the same pathway, or if the discovery of amlexanox's effectiveness in mice can lead to a compound that is safe and effective for treating obesity and diabetes in humans.

"We will be working hard on that," Saltiel said.

Security risks of extreme weather and climate change

Feb. 11, 2013 ? Increasingly frequent extreme weather events such as droughts, floods, severe storms, and heat waves have focused the attention of climate scientists on the connections between greenhouse warming and extreme weather. Because of the potential threat to U.S. national security, a new study was conducted to explore the forces driving extreme weather events and their impacts over the next decade, specifically with regard to their implications for national security planning. The report finds that the early ramifications of climate extremes resulting from climate change are already upon us and will continue to be felt over the next decade, directly impacting U.S. national security interests.

"Lessons from the past are no longer of great value as a guide to the future," said co-lead author Michael McElroy, Gilbert Butler Professor of Environmental Studies at Harvard University. "Unexpected changes in regional weather are likely to define the new climate normal, and we are not prepared."

Changes in extremes include more record high temperatures; fewer but stronger tropical cyclones; wider areas of drought and increases in precipitation; increased climate variability; Arctic warming and attendant impacts; and continued sea level rise as greenhouse warming continues and even accelerates. These changes will affect water and food availability, energy decisions, the design of critical infrastructure, use of the global commons such as the oceans and the Arctic region, and critical ecosystem resources. They will affect both underdeveloped and industrialized countries with large costs in terms of economic and human security. The study identifies specific regional climate impacts -- droughts and desertification in Mexico, Southwest Asia, and the Eastern Mediterranean, and increased flooding in South Asia -- that are of particular strategic importance to the United States.

The report concludes that the risks related to extreme weather require that the U.S. sustain and augment its scientific and technical capacity to observe key indicators, monitor unfolding events, and forewarn of impending security threats as nations adapt to a changing climate. The study recommends a national strategy for strategic observations and monitoring -- including greenhouse gas and aerosol emissions, ocean temperatures, and satellite observations of the Arctic -- and improved forecast models. "Our critical observational infrastructure is at risk from declining funding," added co-lead author D. James Baker, Director of the Global Carbon Measurement Program at the William J. Clinton Foundation and former Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). "Without that knowledge, the needs of civil society and national security for mitigation and adaptation will go unmet."

The report grew out of a series of workshops with an international group of leading climate scientists held at the National Academy of Sciences, Columbia University, and the Harvard University Center for the Environment. The study was conducted with funds provided by the Central Intelligence Agency. Fashion designers go digital to reach broadest audience

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hundreds of fashion designers are showing their fall and winter 2013 collections at New York Fashion Week, but not all of them are on the runway.

The semi-annual event, which is followed by fashion weeks in London, Paris and Milan, includes up to 500 fashion shows around New York and attracts about 232,000 people, from buyers to foreign press and wealthy customers.

Top name designers at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, which runs at Manhattan's Lincoln Center through February 14, have been streaming their runway shows online for the past three or four years.

Now, many lesser-known names, up-and coming-fashion stars and established designers who want to reach a wider, younger audience are going digital.

"This season it is really prevalent," said Stacy Roman of the New York fashion and publicity firm Factory PR. "There has definitely been an increase in this type of platform."

In addition to reaching a wider audience, going digital lets designers give fashionistas a behind-the-scenes look at the show and presentations, taking them backstage and through make-up and even fittings.

It is also far less expensive than staging a runway show, which can run upwards of $100,000 depending on the venue, models, makeup artists, stylists and disc jockeys for the show.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX

Rachel Roy, who launched her first collection in 2005 and has done presentations at Fashion Week, will feature her designs in a digital runway show to stream live on February 14.

"It just really seemed like the right thing to do," said Roy, whose collection juxtaposes modern and antique looks with deep jewel tones and bright metallics, textured and smooth fabrics and light with dark colors.

"I always want to think outside the box, to do something that is new and fresh, and I think part of my job is to bring newness to fashion," she said. "Part of doing that is showing to as many people that love fashion, that want it, making it accessible to them."

Roy is building a full set for her digital show and will include backstage shots to let viewers experience all elements of the production.

Los Angeles-based Kelly Wearstler is also taking the digital route and will feature plenty of denim in a collection that will be displayed in her New York showroom and in a digital show with behind-the-scenes videos shot in her California studio.

"I am in the infancy stage of my fashion world, and I have a ton to learn, so I am baby-stepping it," said Wearstler, who launched her fashion line 18 months ago but has been in interior design for more than 17 years and has a flagship store in Los Angeles.

The content will go out on several digital platforms including her blog , Twitter, the content sharing service Pinterest, the photo sharing and social networking services Instagram and Facebook, as well as fashion-focused websites such as Refinery29.com, racked.com, Style.com and Vine, Twitter's new video sharing app for recording and sharing six-second clips.

"Right now I am happy where I am, learning and growing," she added.

For 32-year-old Radhika Perera-Hernandez, who designs for her New York based-Lois London label, there was no question that online is the place to be.

"It is the smartest way for a start-up line to get their name out there. A lot of designers that are at the same level as myself are doing the same kind of thing," she said.

Perera-Hernandez, who was born and raised in London, features kaftans, jumpsuits and swimwear in her collection.

"Anything that I am doing for the brand I will be pushing through my website and (the microblogging website) Tumblr and any of the other viral things that I have going on."
