CBS Sports will stream Alabama vs. Texas A&M on its website, mobile apps

CBS

When Alabama takes on Texas A&M in college football this afternoon, CBS will have more to offer than just a dedicated "Johnny Cam" following the Heisman winner all day (no, it will not be giving away autographed memorabilia). CBS plans to stream every SEC "Game of the Week" (most are TBD right now, check the schedule after the break) it broadcasts, and this one is up first. That means fans can watch on CBSSports.com or via its iOS mobile app. As an added bonus for fans, just like its Super Bowl live stream and in the NFL's Game Rewind service, there's an All-22 "eye in the sky" angle available as an alternative to the broadcast feed. Shot from a high view over the 50 yard line to show ever player on the field, it lets fans who dig the Xs and Os watch the way coaches do when they break down game film. Internet viewers will have the alternate camera angle plus live stats, Twitter integration, polls and on-demand video clips.

Asia-Pac Soars, Japan Drops in Regional Semiconductor Capex Spending

Capex spending flips in Asia-Pac and Japan; Europe's share erodes while North America gains.

September 12, 2013 -- In its Research Bulletin dated August 27, 2013, IC Insights traced the sales of the top 10 semiconductor companies dating back to 1985. ?In 1990, six Japanese companies were counted among the top 10 leaders in semiconductor sales. ?In that year?in many ways, the peak of its semiconductor manufacturing and market strength?Japanese companies accounted for 51% of total semiconductor capital spending (Figure 1).

Figure 1

North American companies accounted for 31% of semiconductor capex in 1990 and the Asia-Pacific region captured 10% share, slightly ahead of the 8% held by European companies. ?For perspective, Japan?s share of semi capex in 1990 was 20 points more than North America, 41 points more than Asia-Pacific, and 43 points more than Europe.

After reaching its highest-ever share of capital spending in 1990, Japan relinquished 20 points of marketshare and in five years trailed North America in semiconductor capital spending. ?Economic malaise forced many of Japan?s strongest semiconductor companies to trim capex budgets and re-evaluate long-term strategic business plans. ?At the same time, Japan was also feeling competitive pressure from South Korea, which had developed a strong memory manufacturing presence of its own; and from Taiwan, where the foundry business model was beginning to prosper. In 1998, Japan trailed not only the North America region in semiconductor capital spending, but the Asia-Pacific region as well. ?Fast-forward to 2010 and Japan and Asia-Pacific had essentially swapped places in terms of semiconductor capex marketshare. ?In 1H13, Japan?s share of total semiconductor capital spending had dwindled to 7%.

Japanese suppliers that are no longer in the semiconductor business include NEC, Hitachi, and Matsushita. ?Other Japanese semiconductor companies that have greatly curtailed semiconductor operations include Sanyo, which was acquired by ON Semiconductor; Sony, which cut semiconductor capital spending and announced its move to an asset-lite strategy for ICs; Fujitsu, which sold its wireless group to Intel, sold its MCU and analog IC business to Spansion, and is consolidating its system LSI business with Panasonic?s; and Mitsubishi.

Meanwhile, from 2000-1H13, China joined semiconductor companies in South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore by investing heavily in wafer fabs and advanced process technology. ?These investments by Asia-Pacific companies were used primarily to produce DRAM and flash memory, microcontrollers, and to bolster wafer foundry operations. Asia-Pacific accounted for 53% of capex marketshare in 1H13, down slightly from its 55% peak in 2010.

Mostly on account of spending by Intel, GlobalFoundries, Micron, and SanDisk, North America accounted for 37% of capital spending in 1H13, a few points higher than the steady 29%-33% share it has held since 1990.

There are three large European semiconductor suppliers and each now operates using a fab-lite or asset-lite strategy, which is why semiconductor capital spending from European companies accounted for only 3% of total capex in 1H13. IC Insights forecasts capex spending by Europe-based ST, Infineon, and NXP and all other European semiconductor suppliers combined will amount to less than $1.5 billion in 2013. ?Led by Samsung, Intel, and TSMC, there are nine semiconductor suppliers that are forecast to spend more money on their own than Europe will spend collectively in 2013. ?In IC Insights? opinion, IC manufacturers that are currently spending less than $1.0 billion a year on capital outlays will find it just about impossible to continue being able to manufacture using leading-edge digital processing technology, which is why European suppliers now outsource their most critical processing to foundries.

Report Details: ?The 2013 McClean Report

Data in this Research Bulletin was excerpted from the upcoming September Update to IC Insights? flagship report, The McClean Report?A Complete Analysis and Forecast of the Integrated Circuit Industry. ?A subscription to The McClean Report includes free monthly updates from March through November (including the 250+ page Mid-Year Update), and free access to subscriber-only webinars throughout the year. ?An individual-user subscription to the 2013 edition of The McClean Report is priced at $3,390 and includes an Internet access password. ?A multi-user worldwide corporate license is available for $6,390.

Chinese,protestant groups,Beijing,doomsday cult

Beijing:?

China?s state-sanctioned Protestant Church yesterday issued a resolution to fight cults, as top leaders met at the National Chinese Christian Congress in Beijing.

The Three-Self Patriotic Movement of the Protestant Churches in China (TSPM) and the China Christian Council (CCC), the country?s two main Protestant bodies, singled out the doomsday cult Eastern Lightning, a group which had thousands arrested last year as it predicted the end of the world on December 21.

?The meeting held that heresy and cult followers? undermine social stability and harmony,? the TSPM and CCC said, announcing the resolution on their joint website.

The congress, held every five years, urged clergy and congregations across China to resist groups that do not follow the ?pure faith.?

Also known as the Church of Almighty God, Eastern Lightning is estimated to have more than one million members across China, Hong Kong and Taiwan who believe that God returned to Earth as a woman, ?Lightning Deng,? in northeastern Henan province in 1992.

The group attracted the wrath of Chinese authorities last year when it predicted the end of the Communist Party and the world on December 21.

Since then Protestants in both the state-sanctioned church and the underground movement have been critical of what is seen as Eastern Lightning's heretical interpretations of the Bible and extreme conversion methods which have reportedly included kidnappings.

?Even though the doomsday prophecy did not come true in the end, believers have not left the cult because they have been brainwashed,? said a postgraduate student at a Protestant seminary in eastern Anhui province who declined to be named.

Eastern Lightning is controlled by Zhao Weishan who lives in exile in the United States.

No prison for woman whose baby died after she ate rat poison while pregnant

By Susan Guyett, Reuters

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana prosecutors have dropped murder and attempted feticide charges against an Indianapolis woman who tried to kill herself by eating rat poison near the end of her pregnancy.

Bei Bei Shuai, 36, was charged in March 2011 with knowingly killing a viable fetus, prosecutors said.

Shuai walked out of Marion County Superior Court in Indianapolis a free woman on Friday after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of criminal recklessness for the death of her newborn daughter, Angel.

She had been released from prison on bond in May 2012. Under the plea agreement, she did not have to serve more jail time.

"I have to say thank you to everyone who supported me before because without them, I'm not going to be able to continue to today," Shuai told reporters in footage posted on the Indianapolis Star website.

Shuai consumed rat poison while 33 weeks' pregnant in December 2010, prosecutors said. She was taken to a hospital where she admitted to attempting to kill herself after her boyfriend left her, according to a police statement.

Shuai's baby girl, Angel Shuai, was born alive, but died a few days after being taken off life support.

Shuai is from China and has no family members in the United States, according to her lawyer, Linda Pence.

Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry said his office had always been willing to resolve the case for lesser charges. Earlier proposed deals had been rejected by the defense.

Curry said decisions by the trial judge about what could and could not be entered into evidence at the trial played a role in the negotiations.

Two videos claim to show shells of iPad 5 and plastic iPhone 5C

The rumors that a cheaper, plastic iPhone is in the works have been slowly gaining steam for the past few weeks. Today, a Mac-themed YouTube account has uploaded two videos, one of which claims to show the case for the plastic iPhone 5C and the other showing what the fifth generation iPad might look like.

The brief iPhone 5C clip shows the case shell placed next to a current iPhone 5. The video seems to match earlier photo leaks of this still unconfirmed version of Apple's smartphone. While Apple sold 31.2 million iPhones in the last quarter, the launch of a cheaper version made of plastic could lead to an even bigger boost in sales.

The other new video leak reportedly shows what the shell of the iPad 5 is supposed to look like. Again, it matches previous photo leaks and rumored information about the tablet, which claim it will have side bezels that are narrower than the current fourth generation iPad.

Apple is expected to announce a number of new smartphone and tablet products later this fall. All of them should have iOS 7 out of the box, which was first introduced in June with its flatter UI design.

Whoopsie. Someone kinda got distracted by all this Moto X stuff and forgot to post Thursday's contest. My fault. So let's double up on Friday and give away two more Chromecasts!

Just leave a comment on this post. We'll shut things down at midnight PST and pick a couple winners soon thereafter.

Only one more to go after this. Now, what to do with these new Nexus 7s and a bunch of NVIDIA Shields? To be continued ...

Main Features

MacBook Air now features all-day battery life, fourth-generation Intel Core processors with faster graphics, faster flash storage, and new 802.11ac Wi-Fi. It's just 0.68 inch thin and weighs as little as 2.38 pounds. But a sturdy aluminum unibody design makes MacBook Air tough and durable, too. It's loaded with great built-in apps. And you'll find thousands more at the Mac App Store.

Up to 12 hours of battery life.
It won't call it a day until you do.

The 11-inch MacBook Air now lasts up to 9 hours between charges and the 13-inch model lasts up to an incredible 12 hours. So from your morning coffee till your evening commute, you can work unplugged. When it's time to kick back and relax, you can get up to 10 hours of iTunes movie playback on the 13-inch model and up to 8 hours on the 11-inch model. And with up to 30 days of standby time, you can go away for weeks and pick up right where you left off.

Fourth-generation Intel Core processors.
Performance, meet endurance.

MacBook Air is powered by the all-new fourth-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors. This ultra-efficient architecture was designed to use less power and still deliver high performance. Which means not only can you do whatever you want - you can keep doing it for longer than before. In addition, the new Intel HD Graphics 5000 offers up to 40 percent faster graphics - performance you?ll especially notice with games and other graphics-intensive tasks.

Up to 3x faster Wi-Fi. 802.11ac.
The new definition of fast.

MacBook Air now supports ultrafast 802.11ac Wi-Fi. When connected to an 802.11ac base station - including the new AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule - wireless performance is up to 3x faster than with the previous generation of MacBook Air. And your Wi-Fi range improves as well. With Bluetooth technology, you can connect MacBook Air to Bluetooth-enabled devices like speakers and headphones. Even without all the wires, you're totally connected.

Faster all-flash storage.
Ready. Set. Done.

Part of what makes MacBook Air so responsive is that it's designed entirely around flash storage. Not only does this make MacBook Air much lighter and more portable than traditional notebooks, it also provides faster access to data. Available in capacities up to 512GB, this next-generation flash storage is up to 9x faster than a traditional 5400-rpm notebook hard drive. And it's up to 45 percent faster than the flash storage in the previous-generation MacBook Air. So when you flip open MacBook Air, it's ready to go right away. Even after a month in standby mode, the screen springs to life. As if this big bump in performance wasn't enough, the 11-inch model now comes standard with double the capacity - 128GB.

With the lightning-fast Thunderbolt port, you can connect your MacBook Air to the latest devices and displays, like the Apple Thunderbolt Display. But that's not the whole story. MacBook Air also comes equipped with two USB 3 ports, so you can connect the latest USB 3 devices and all your USB 2 devices as well. With just a few connections, MacBook Air transforms from an ultraportable notebook to a complete workstation.

Display, camera, and mics.
Impressive. In every sense.

LED-backlit display. Millions of pixels. Millimeters thin.

Corner to corner and pixel by pixel, the MacBook Air display is both an engineering feat and a design breakthrough. The display measures a mere 4.86 millimeters (0.19 inch) thin, yet its resolution makes you feel like you're looking at a larger screen. The 11-inch MacBook Air features a resolution of 1366 by 768 pixels, while the 13-inch model wows with a resolution of 1440 by 900 pixels. And LED backlighting makes colors bright and vibrant from edge to edge. So whether you're editing photos, perfecting a presentation, or watching a movie, you're going to love what you see.

720p FaceTime HD camera. Stay sharp.

Let your friends and family see more of you with the 720p FaceTime HD camera. Every smile looks bright, even halfway around the world. And the widescreen format means everyone can fit into the picture without having to crowd around the display.

Dual mics. They'll hear you loud and clear.

The dual microphones in MacBook Air are great for when you want to be heard. If you're making a FaceTime call, for example, the mics reduce background noise from behind the notebook. And when you use Dictation, they create an adaptive audio beam that intelligently adjusts to detect your voice - instead of the noise around you.

Multi-Touch trackpad.
It goes hand in hand with OS X.

The Multi-Touch gestures in OS X make everything you do on MacBook Air more intuitive, direct, and fun. And the spacious Multi-Touch trackpad is perfectly designed for them, whether it's a three-finger swipe to activate Mission Control or a four-finger pinch to see all your apps in Launchpad. Gesture responses are smooth and realistic. So when you're scrolling up and down a web page or swiping from one full-screen app to another, it's almost like you're touching what you're seeing.

Discarded NYC theater prop sparks bomb scare

NEW YORK (AP) ? A New York City playwright who directed a show called the "American Suicide Bomber Association" unwitting sparked a bomb scare when he threw a prop from the production into the trash at his home.

Playwright Ethan Fishbane tells The New York Post (http://bit.ly/16Pymas ) he wasn't thinking when he discarded the fake bomb while cleaning out his Manhattan apartment Tuesday.

A building superintendent saw the prop the next morning and called police.

That brought out the bomb squad.

It didn't take long for investigators to figure out what had happened.

Fishbane says he was stunned when officers knocked on his door, but he praised the department for its quick response, saying it was "wholly appropriate."

The 23-year-old wrote the play while attending New York University's Tisch School of The Arts.

Buffett's buffet: "Oracle of Omaha" to play Willy Wonka ?

Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffett dips bonbons with Victoria Melena May 4, 2013 during a visit to the See's Candies display at the 2013 Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders meeting in Omaha. Buffett is auctioning a personal tour of the See's factory

Billionaire investors don't often get to play Willy Wonka, but that's what Warren Buffett is going to do.

He is auctioning off an all-you-can-eat tour of the See's Candies factory in Los Angeles to benefit an educational charity he supports.

Bidding had already reached $30,000 by Monday, but it remains to be seen whether the final price of this auction will rival the annual auction of lunch with Buffett which routinely tops $1 million.

The online auction that runs through Aug. 13 will benefit Communities In Schools of Los Angeles. It is being offered on the charitybuzz.com website.

According to the site, Buffett will teach the auction winner the proper way to eat a bonbon during the half-day tour. Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate has owned See's Candies since 1972, and he spends hours munching on See's treats while answering questions at Berkshire's annual meetings.

Buffett, known as the "Oracle of Omaha" for his investment acumen, is a philanthropist and the world's third richest man according to Forbes magazine. He did not immediately respond to questions about this new auction on Monday.

For more than a decade, the only time Buffett auctioned off a chance to meet with him was the lunch auction that helps fund the Glide Foundation's efforts to help the poor and homeless in San Francisco.

The winner of this year's lunch auction paid $1,000,100. That's a bargain compared to the previous five years when the winning bids all topped $2 million, including the record 2012 bid of $3,456,789.

The lunch auction winners get to spend several hours asking Buffett questions about business, philanthropy and life.

The fine print on the candy auction site promises only a meeting with Buffett (aka Willy Wonka) where the winner can take a picture with the renowned investor and get an item autographed, so the candy tour may not offer nearly as much opportunity to learn from Buffett.

Investors all over the world watch what Buffett does and try to copy his moves because of his remarkable track record of success. Through the end of 2012, Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway has delivered a compounded annual gain of 19.7 percent to investors ? more than double the S&P 500's growth rate.

And Buffett, 82, has been gradually giving away his fortune since 2006. He plans to eventually divide most of his shares of Berkshire Hathaway stock between five charitable foundations, with the largest block going to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
