If San Diego Chargers president Dean Spanos does not clean house, that would be more disappointing to many fans than how the team has played.
Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Thursday that Spanos had decided to fire general manager A.J. Smith and coach Norv Turner after the season.
Spanos then issued a statement denying that he had made a decision.
"There is only one person in this organization who will make those decisions and that's me, and I haven't shared my thoughts with anyone," Spanos said. "I will make my evaluations at the end of the season. Anything coming out now ? from sources or otherwise ? is pure speculation."
It's not pure speculation that the gap between the Chargers and Denver Broncos has widened. With Peyton Manning coming to Denver and Von Miller becoming a pass rusher for the ages, the Broncos are setting the bar for the AFC West.
Manning looks capable of playing at a high level for a few more seasons. Miller, scary as it sounds to opposing quarterbacks, might get ever better. And Broncos coach John Fox has been to a Super Bowl before with the Carolina Panthers. Give Fox talent, and he wins.
The Chargers enter Week 14 at 4-8 and are about to miss the playoffs for the third consecutive season. Smith has been the general manager since 2003 while Turner has been coach since 2007, so it's not like they haven't had time.
